Content note: this story includes depression and a medical crisis.
Margaret Eastman Smith grew up inside a movement that believed giving yourself fully could change the world. In this part of our conversation, she remembers a bike ride down a big hill into the center of Oxford. Somewhere on that ride, she knew the questions in her life would not be answered until she left.
She did not act on it right away. It took three more years. She talks about why she stayed, a medical crisis and a heavy stretch of depression, and the moment she saw that her father understood.
At 35, she loaded up a little blue Plymouth and drove to Boston to start over at university. She says it was a shock to find there was no template. She also shares how it felt to answer the question of who she was with, "I'm an undergraduate student at Boston University, which doesn't sound very good."
