I was the kid with the dead mom, looking at everyone else's family and wondering what it felt like to have both parents at home. Margaret had her own version of that curiosity. At her friends' houses she saw a smaller, more compact world, with Dad off to work on a routine and the heart of the home around Mom and the cooking. She had never once lived with just her parents, so the whole thing felt new to her.
