I Walked My Father to the End of His Life, and It Changed Me

Please note: this story includes a father's death with dignity and a family history of suicide.

Jennifer Griffith's father was dying of lung cancer. He was a strong, self-controlled man, and he did not want to lose all control. So he chose death with dignity. Near the end of his life, he told her why he had wanted to leave the family years before.

Jennifer was sitting at his feet when he said it. Life, it just went so fast. She was 42. In that moment, she decided she would stop denying herself the things she really wanted to do. She wanted to write her book.

Three people in her father's immediate family had died by suicide. She and her sisters asked him to do it a different way and not do it alone. Jennifer calls it an honor to walk him to the other side of life. She says it changed her.

This is part of Jennifer's conversation on The Life Shift. In the full episode, she talks about her mother's secret, the five years her father stayed, and the book she finally wrote.
