49 Days at Sea While the World Shut Down Without Us

Angela Harger Thompson left Panama on March 7, 2020, on a small sailboat headed for the Marquesas. Five people were on board, along with a dog. A week out, news of the coronavirus reached them by satellite email.

There was no internet. The rules for where they could land kept changing. Nobody on the boat knew how they would get home. Angela worried most about her family. At one point she was sure she might be the only person who survived.

Forty-nine days after they set out, they landed in Hawaii. The first thing they were handed was a mask. She remembers the relief of being home.
