Rob Lynch is an author, mental health advocate, and animal rights supporter based near Toronto, Canada. His debut novel, Vudon Caliber, is available on Amazon. He is a passionate music fan, film lover, and someone who believes, along with Ted Lasso, that we are never finished versions of ourselves.

What is it like to find out you were adopted at 11? What happens when a DNA test connects you to your biological mother? How do you make a phone call you have waited decades to make?

Rob Lynch learned he was adopted when he was eleven. He grew up with parents who loved him and made peace with not knowing more. Then his daughter took a DNA test during lockdown, and a woman wrote to say she thought they were first cousins. That led to a phone number for his biological mother. It took Rob three Sundays to dial it. This is a story about late discovery adoption, a family secret, and a reunion that arrived years later.

In Rob's words:

"She answered the phone and immediately began sobbing. And the first things that she said were: I looked for you for so long. Can you ever forgive me? Have you had a good life? I said, there is nothing for you to forgive. And I have had a fabulous life up to this point. So it just went from there."

"I've always felt different. I would be at a family function, at school, anywhere in the world, and I would be thinking to myself, there is something universally, there is something within the ether that all of these people around me are tapping into that I just don't feel that I am."

"We are never, ever finished versions of ourselves. And I think that's something that you always need to keep in the back of your brain."
